- Optimizing your system for RoboHELP Classic
- -------------------------------------------
-
- RoboHELP is an application that can be impacted by the way other
- applications on your system are configured. Here are some suggestions
- for getting the optimal performance from RoboHELP on your system.
-
- 1) Disable Virus scanning software for file "robohelp.dot"
- If you are using virus-scanning software, this may severely impact
- the response of RoboHELP. You need to disable scanning of the RoboHELP
- template, "robohelp.dot". For specific information on excluding files
- from your virus scanning utility, consultant your virus scanning software
- user's manual or the on-line help.
-
- 2) Make sure your system drive has at least 10% free
- On most systems the virtual memory is configured to take a certain
- percentage of the available disk space. Running with too little disk space
- will dramatically reduce the total memory available to run applications.
- Microsoft Word can create large temporary files, particularly when working
- on RoboHELP projects in WYSIWYG mode. Make sure that your system drive
- (the drive where Windows is installed) has at least 10% disk space free.
- Running with less than 10% disk space free will impact the speed of all
- programs on your system, including RoboHELP and Microsoft Word.
-
- 3) Disable Auto Start Word/Auto Start RH Explorer
- If you do not want MS Word to automatically open when starting your RoboHELP
- project, uncheck these options. RoboHELP Explorer will load your project more
- quickly, and MS Word will be launched when it is needed to perform editing.
- To disable these options, open RoboHELP Explorer and from the Tools menu,
- choose Options. Click the General tab, and uncheck "Auto Start Word" and
- "Auto Start RoboHELP Explorer".
-
- 4) Do not use MS Word as your email editor
- If you use MS Exchange/Outlook as your email client, do not use Word as your
- email editor, or do not read email while using RoboHELP. Using Word as your
- email editor while using RoboHELP can cause RoboHELP Explorer to lose its
- connection with MS Word.
-
- 5) Installing over older components
- If you are encountering random program GPF's or Access violations, it may be
- caused by having older RoboHELP components on your system. Make sure you
- uninstall any previous version of RoboHELP on your system. Then reinstall
- RoboHELP.
-
- 6) Wrong version of C Run Time
- If you are encountering random program GPF's or Access violations, it may
- be caused by having out of sync system .DLLs on your system. Other
- applications may install MS system .DLLs which leave your system in an
- unpredictable state. We have a diagnostic tool which you can run on your
- system to determine if this is the problem. Send email to
- support@blue-sky.com with the subject "C Run time error" and we will
- provide more detailed instructions to you.
-
-
-
- Optimizing MS Word for use with RoboHELP Classic
- ------------------------------------------------
-
- 1) User Templates directory
- If you open RoboHELP Explorer and MS Word opens, and then you receive
- the error "Can not start MS Word to complete requested action", this is
- usually caused when the User Templates directory points to a location other
- than where your RoboHELP templates have been installed. Verify that the
- User Templates directory in MS Word is pointing to the appropriate folder
- (the directory that contains the file "robohelp.dot").
-
- 2) Disable every option under the MS Word Save tab
- From the Tools menu, choose Options, click the Save tab, and disable any
- options that are checked. The features under this tab can cause problems
- when saving large documents. Make sure that you save your work regularly.
-
- 3) Disable automatic spell checking
- From the Tools menu, choose Options, click the Spelling and Grammar tab,
- and uncheck "Check Spelling as you type". This option will highlight any
- hidden text in your document as a spelling error, which can be confusing.
-
- 4) Disable the Auto Format features in MS Word
- From the Tools menu, choose Auto Correct, select the "Auto Format as you
- type" tab and uncheck all options. This will prevent word from inserting
- Auto text which may not display correctly in a compiled help file.
-
- 5) If you are using Word 97, install SR-2. SR-2 (Service Release 2) can
- correct bugs in MS Word which can cause frustration to Help developers
- (especially bugs with numbered lists).
-
- 6) Occasionally Word's auto save feature can interfere with some of RoboHELP's
- operations, like Smart Index. If Smart Index stops mid way through indexing,
- you can temporarily turn off a setting in Word to resolve the issue.
- Word 95:
- a) From the Tools menu, select Options.
- b) Click the Save tab.
- c) Temporarily turn off 'Automatic Save Every...'.
- d) Turn the setting back on after you've completed the RoboHELP operation.
- Word 97:
- a) From the Tools menu, select Options.
- b) Click the Save tab.
- c) Temporarily turn off 'Allow background saves' and 'Save Autorecover info...'.
- d) Turn the settings back on after you've completed the RoboHELP operation.
-
- 7) Word 97 sometimes runs out of system resources when importing documentation.
- Word 97 will use less resources if you save the document in Word 95 format
- before importing it as a Help Document.
- From Word 97's File menu, select Save As, and then Save as type: Word 6.0/95.
